Health is Wealth: Challenges of Financing a State of the Art Pharmaceutical project in Africa - Paul A. Lartey and Alexandra E. Graham:  It is very difficult to attract financing for an innovative pharmaceutical manufacturing business in sub-Saharan Africa.  This editorial relates some of our experiences in that regard and attempts to analyze the status quo and at the same time draw attention to the importance of financing self-sufficient pharmaceutical production as part of an overall economic growth and poverty reduction strategy - 1st GBC, Corporate Africa Health Conference, 15-16 April, 2007, Accra, Ghana. gbc1_article

The Challenge of Pharmaceutical Manufacturing in Africa Improvements through Regional Cooperation - Paul A. Lartey, Ph.D. and Alexandra E. Graham, Ph.D., MBA:  Excessive dependence on importation of essential drugs threatens to perpetuate the poor state of healthcare in sub-Saharan Africa. The need to establish a high quality pharmaceutical manufacturing base has long been acknowledged by NEPAD.  Nonetheless, the local industry seriously lags behind in terms of technology and quality standards.  Furthermore, the prevalence of fake drugs and dumping by some foreign manufacturers threaten the stability and growth of the local industry - 2nd GBC Corporate Africa Health Conference, Abuja, Nigeria, 2-4 Sept., 2008. gbc2 abstract

Studies on the Antifungal and Antibacterial Properties of Mycopirox - Omotayo Akanji, Godfred Danso-Fadehan and An-Lammeh Ketting: Mycopirox is a 1% aqueous cream of the N-hydroxypyrone ciclopirox olamine, topical antifungal agent. The active ingredient has been shown to be superior to the azoles such as miconazole, clotrimazole and ketoconazole in that, unlike the azoles, it is fungicidal, bactericidal and has broad spectrum activity against both fungi and bacteria.  In this study, we compared the antimicrobial properties of Mycopirox, as formulated, with two leading brands of miconazole cream, available in West Africa.  Our studies show that Mycopirox is superior to the ‘leading azoles’, as it is rapidly fungicidal and bactericidal at applied doses and is potent against both gram positive and gram negative bacteria.  Annual General meeting, Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana, , Tamale, Ghana, 13-16 August, 2008 psgagm_poster

Building Capacity for Drug Discovery, Development and Manufacturing under cGMP Conditions in West Africa - Paul A. Lartey, Alexandra E. Graham and Omotayo Akanji:  Africa must build capacity to discover, develop and introduce innovative drugs for the treatment of endemic diseases, in order to help reduce the disproportionate burden of disease on the continent. A critical component in this quest is the engagement of a private sector with the vision and mission to attain self-sufficiency in pharmaceutical development and commercialization. We introduce ourselves as the first local pharmaceutical manufacturer in West Africa that has translated such a vision into reality - 1st African Network for Drug and Diagnostics Innovation, Abuja, Nigeria 6-8 October, 2008. andi_poster
